Sonchus asper

Common name: Sow thistle
Family: Asteraceae
Size: Up to 2 meters tall, usually much lower
Description:  Upright, coarse, contains milky juice
Habitat: Various soils, likes sun
Native to Europe.


Flower:

  • 3 cm across
  • ray flowers numerous, yellow
  • Disk flowers absent
  • Heads solitary on short, leafless stalk
  • Stalks several, near top of steam, clustered
























Leaves and stem:
  • Leaves 7-20 cm long
  • Alternate, stalkess
  • Margins lobed, sharply toothed with spines
